Alfred Rose, born Rosario Alfred Fernandes, was a legendary singer and performer from Goa, India. He was born on August 5th, 1932, in a small village called Calvim, Aldona. His parents were Ambrose Fernandes and Dolarosa Fernandes.
When Alfred was young, his father worked with Jesuit priests in Karachi. These priests affectionately called him “A.M.B. Rose.” Alfred liked this nickname so much that he later used it as his stage name.
Alfred Rose became a very famous singer and performer. He was known for his Panama hat and the music baton he held while leading performances. He performed in a type of Goan theater called “tiatr,” which includes songs and acting. He also entertained people at many non-stop Konkani musical shows in Bombay (now Mumbai) many years ago.
Alfred Rose wasn’t just famous in Goa or India; he took Konkani music to many parts of the world. He performed for Goans who had moved to places like the U.K., France, Germany, East Africa, and the Arabian Gulf. This helped make Konkani music popular in many different countries.
Sadly, Alfred Rose passed away on October 21st of last year. His death was a great loss for the world of Konkani music. It was like losing a bright star in the sky. However, we can imagine that Alfred is now singing with angels in heaven.
