How Rosario Rodrigues Redefined Khell-Tiatr
Rosario Rodrigues Konkani Tiatrist: Many would not know that he was a Doctor, late Dr. Rosario Rodrigues, whom people remember fondly as one of the greatest innovators of the Konkani khell-tiatr stage, was born on 24th October 1948 in Benaulim, Salcete, Goa. During his childhood, he proved to be an excellent student and showed keen interest in dramas from an early age.
This interest came more firmly in place by benaulim, the only khell-tiatristic village with both the literate and illiterates. Dr. Rosario wrote scripts for most people who could not read but had an urge to play that part. It came through his own pen with which he scripted his own; hence, his first ever KHLELL in 1969, “MENAKXI”.
Longuinhos Hotel: Dr. Rosario’s Creative Retreat
Dr. Rosario Rodrigues had a special place where he found inspiration for his scripts—the iconic Longuinhos Hotel in Margao. This busy restaurant, located at a prime spot in the heart of the city, became his creative retreat.
He would sit for long hours at one corner of the hotel, observing the hustle and bustle of people passing by. It was said that the vibrant energy of the location refreshed his mind and sparked ideas for his thought-provoking khell-tiatrs. While spending time there, he often had his lunch, using the peaceful yet lively atmosphere to craft some of his most memorable scripts.
Longuinhos Hotel wasn’t just a restaurant for Dr. Rosario—it was a sanctuary where his creativity flowed, shaping the future of Konkani theater.
Khell-Tiatr Innovations
Khell-tiatrs, in the early periods, were considered to be an event that was competition-based. Then, two directors would go on to direct their respective plays and winners would be determined by the public’s vote. In 1971, Dr. Rosario innovatively changed the theme by conducting two khells under one stage. It was called Khell-Tiatr.
His own khell-tiatrs “AMI FATOR” and “EKUCH RATI” became overnight sensations. Soon enough, other directors too followed this trend.
Every khell in this season took 1.5 hours of stage performance. Some of the popular khell-tiatrs done by Dr. Rosario are:
- “12 Vorsani”
- “Patang”
- “Patkin”
- “Chedde Cheddvam”
- “Hindustani Cheddvam”
- “Frank Sinatra”
In 1976, the other revolutionary innovation was presented by Dr. Rosario. Instead of presenting two short khells, he composed a full-length drama of 3 hours titled “FATTIM PAULO”, and it became successful. Again, this time his brilliance inspired others to emulate the same pattern.
It bridged the gap between Tiatrs and Khell-Tiatrs
Khell tiatrs were meant to be for the people where a doctor Rosario changed peoples mentality on this type of play by putting them parallel in front of the tiatr. His innovations and efforts crossed the limit that made this attractive khell tiatrs so appealing that they caught more crowd than the civilized class of people, called tiatrs.
